DIY Child Porn: Hey, Stop That!

cnncellphone.jpg
One of the weird developments of the brave new world of self surveillance is the fact that it has put cameras in almost every cell phone - and porn making and distribution abilities into the hands of everyone who owns a camera phone.

A fifteen year old Utah boy has been charged with a third degree felony for making child porn - that is, taking and distributing sexual pictures of fully consenting teenagers. CNN.com has a video about this issue, in which it is reported that these cell phone pics, in addition to being sent from phone to phone, are being posted on MySpace and Facebook. Except, of course, that a little bit of fact checking would reveal that both sites have ever-stricter growing policies about nudity. Accounts on both sites can get deleted or blocked if their users post nude photos (meaning nipples or more showing). CNN was all too eager to blame the MySpace and the Facebook - too bad they're wrong.
The video also gives some advice meant for parents, to help combat the prevalence of this child porn: install a program to monitor cell phone data transfers (creepy but doable), block their internet access (riiiiiiight, that'll work), buy them a cell phone without a camera (do those even exist? would any self-respecting teen be caught dead with such a technological dinosaur?).

Um. What? I'm sorry folks, but where there is a horny teenage will, there is a pornographic way.

Maybe instead prevention should include things like: discussing sexual behavior and media with teens in a real way, and on the larger scale, reconsidering what "child porn" is and the fairness of children being stamped as sex offenders.

Oh, ya, they should be labeled as sex offenders like gay people and sex workers and johns who are labeled as sex offenders. Soon 80% of the country will be listed as sex offenders and being a sex offender will be meaningless. Jeesh!
