In an age when what goes on in the bedroom has made it out onto the street, four female writers explore the ways in which sex has become a stronger presence than ever in literature, how they decide what to reveal and how to reveal it, and just how much of their own personal sexuality finds its way into their work. Panelists include Catherine Millet, author of the shocking international bestseller The Sexual Life of Catherine M.; Amanda Michalopoulou, prolific author and journalist; Anja Sicking, author of The Silent Sin; and Yael Hedaya, author of the acclaimed novel Accidents. FREE.
American Stripper - photographs by Charise Isis - May 3-June at Peer Gallery, second floor of the West Chelsea Arts Building, 526 West 26th St., between 10th and 11th Avenues. For the last twelve years, Charise Isis has worked on and off in the world of exotic dance (strip clubs). It is a world harshly judged by the mainstream and generally negatively depicted by the media. Strippers are often viewed as dysfunctional people on the fringe of society. Four years ago, she began photographing the women that she works with. At first, she wondered if she should photograph every aspect of this world including the stereotypical "bad stuff" (exploited women with low self esteem), but she realized that she does not view the dancers in this way. Dysfunction exists within the world of exotic dance as it does in every aspect of our society, however it is not the negative things that stayed with her, but rather the humanity that constantly disrobes itself alongside the women. FREE and open to the public. See gallery website for hours.
