Herpes in NYC on the Rise

herpes.jpg
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene put out a press release yesterday reporting that more than 1 in 4 New Yorkers are infected with Herpes Simplex Virus-2, the virus that causes genital herpes. The rate of infection in New York is higher than the national average, which the CDC reports as 1 in 5 adults.

Though the information in the press release delves deeper and gives better information, the second part of the headline, "Survey Finds Genital Herpes is Common Among New Yorkers: Condoms Can Protect Against Infection" is a little misleading. Sure, condoms can protect against herpes in some cases, but it's a skin-to-skin kinda thing, not just body fluids like other STIs such as HIV.

At any rate, that rate of infection is a good reason to have safer sex, do it with the lights on and actually look at your partner's parts, plus learn to cope with it if you have a partner who fesses up to being infected.
