Director Isabel Coixet Captures Ben Kingsley's First Sex Scene

The film website Premiere.com has an exclusive interview with Isabel Coixet, director of a new film called Elegy, a literary adaptation of a Philip Roth novel. The film includes Ben Kingsley's first sex scene:

Talking about capturing intimacy, how did you approach the sex and nude scenes with the actors? What is the key to a successful sex scene? For me, it was not an issue. If I had to shoot a massacre with bodies exploding and guts spilling out, that would be difficult for me because I have never seen that, but sex, I know. We knew from the beginning that it is a key point of the film. We have to translate what kind of link these people have, and how people discover their bodies the first time [they're together]... I was more worried about other scenes. We laughed, and we talked, and it was like, "Okay, take off your clothes." And I remember it was the first time for Ben to do a sex scene, and Penélope [Cruz] has very few sex scenes in her whole career. We had to do it — that was in the script, and that was in the story and was very relevant for the characters, so we did it.
