Internet Meme Scare Tactics: The Case of the Broken Penis

brokenpenis.jpg

I'm sure the penis-having readers of Naked City are cringing right now. Yes, it is indeed possible to break your cock - though humans don't have a penis bone like some other animals do.

However, there's a lot of misinformation in circulation about this fearsome consequence of good sex gone bad.

Snopes breaks down (sorry, couldn't help myself) the facts and the fiction about cock fractures.

The Stripper Method [Video Podcast]

Vegas Undressed, a podcast-driven website all about the ins and outs of Las Vegas, has recently launched a video podcast called The Stripper Method. The show features two well-toned former exotic dancers who are now moms, and the segments include both sexy seduction moves and moves that are more about fitness than sexiness. Pole tricks and lap dance moves are both covered, and the ladies have a good sense of humor - though sometimes the sound recording and mixing is distractingly bad.

The above episode is their first one - it's not as informative as subsequent episodes, but its got some good old fashioned gyrating in it, plus you learn about the two ex-stripper moms and see obvious evidence of their friendly affection for each other.

The Penthouse Pet Handbook: All You Ever Needed to Know

penthousepethandbook.jpg

Kayden Kross, who is the Penthouse Pet of the Month for September 2008, blogged at Mike South's site about the Penthouse Pet Handbook and schwag bag that all newly annointed Pets of the Month get. Yes, its true, Penthouse Pets are expected to comport themselves a certain way, and the official handbook spells it all out:

While all of these things were and are wonderful, I think the item I would like to focus on is the Penthouse Pet Handbook. That’s right. There is a handbook. When I had first signed with Vivid I remember buying Jenna Jameson’s book because I thought it would tell me everything I would need to know. I learned nothing and went into my first scene oblivious. It seems like an aspiring porn star would need a manual. Or maybe the production companies who put girls under contract should print up employee handbooks. That’s essentially what my Penthouse Pet booklet is: an employee handbook. To be honest, I’m thrilled with this new development. There is a dress code. There is a code of conduct. There is a payment schedule and a contact sheet for all of the penthouse people one might need to get a hold of. It even tells you when you can drink and when you can eat. It tells you when you need to have a pedicure. There is a page-long list of suggested ways to sign autographs. This book is gold.

Naked Boy Blog Roundup Begins

015.jpg

There's some inspiring nudity happening over at the blog Pornocracy. Blogger Gabe (pictured above) has decided that there needs to be more male nudity in the sexy blogosphere, which tends to ogle the ladies more often. His first volunteer (second if you count him) is Match. Cheers to that!

Director Isabel Coixet Captures Ben Kingsley's First Sex Scene

elegy.jpg

The film website Premiere.com has an exclusive interview with Isabel Coixet, director of a new film called Elegy, a literary adaptation of a Philip Roth novel. The film includes Ben Kingsley's first sex scene:

Talking about capturing intimacy, how did you approach the sex and nude scenes with the actors? What is the key to a successful sex scene? For me, it was not an issue. If I had to shoot a massacre with bodies exploding and guts spilling out, that would be difficult for me because I have never seen that, but sex, I know. We knew from the beginning that it is a key point of the film. We have to translate what kind of link these people have, and how people discover their bodies the first time [they're together]... I was more worried about other scenes. We laughed, and we talked, and it was like, "Okay, take off your clothes." And I remember it was the first time for Ben to do a sex scene, and Penélope [Cruz] has very few sex scenes in her whole career. We had to do it — that was in the script, and that was in the story and was very relevant for the characters, so we did it.

Stylish Safer Sex: Condom Fashion

readytwogo.jpg

There's only so much you can do to make an actual condom exciting, but there appear to be infinite things you can do to make condom packaging exciting.

The Daily Bedpost has a post up about Ready Two Go safer sex tins. Cute, and for the sex history nerd they're reminiscent of the first commercial condom packages in the United States. Yes, condoms used to come in tins with weird designs. It wasn't innovative or kitschy, just the way it was.

The Frisky also has a wrap-up of sweet condom packaging, including designs from Marc Jacobs and COOP.

Getting Plan B in the Midwest: Tougher Than It Should Be

PlansBDamned.jpg

Nikol Hasler is the host of the immensely popular podcast The MidWest Teen Sex Show, and as a result has begun to become something of a sex ed celebrity - and more importantly, an advocate for teenagers. In her article Plan B Damned: The Quest for Emergency Contraception, she details her search for Plan B in the midwest, in a state where emergency contraception is available over the counter. Suffice to say, she gets the run around and ends up feeling ashamed - and this is an adult woman who works in sex ed and didn't actually need to drug at the time.

Radio Dentata: Just Because It's For Adults, Doesn't Mean It's Porn

index3-rd_03.jpg

The just-launched internet radio station Radio Dentata may be by and for adults, but they're not striving to be one big smut-fest. In addition to a bunch of shows featuring music (which seems good but pretty unremarkable), there are podcasts that are essentially syndicated (like Cunning Minx's Polyamory Weekly, previously featured on Naked City), and a few bits and chunks of original content thrown in there too (though you do have to hunt a bit for that).

Sexual Health Boutique vs Jack Shack: The Changing Face of Sex Shops

freddyeddy.jpg
Photo of Freddy & Eddy's front room (of their shop, not their home) from my Flickr stream wakingvixen

My pal Ian Denchasy, the Freddy half of one of my absolute favorite sex shops, Freddy and Eddy in Los Angeles, has a piece at AVN Novelty called What's Wrong With Sexual Health?. It's written in response to a recent piece by Tony Lovett, the publisher of AVN Novelty (the sex toy-specific publication from Adult Video News), in which Lovett is critical of the upscaling of sex shops and the resistance to using words like "porn" and "adult" because it further reinforces that these are bad things (I'm paraphrasing here).

Ian and his wife and business partner use the phrase "sexual health boutique" to describe their shop, and I think its apt. I don't think that the concept of the "sexual health boutique" is sugar-coating the time honored tradition of porn-lined stores with florescent lighting. Instead, the upscaling of the industry not only appeals to a different audience, but creates the message that there are comfortable boutiques to go to not just for a new pocket rocket when the old one's motor goes on the fritz, but also to learn and perhaps seek out community.

At the same time, I don't think the other kind of porn shops and sex toy marketing will ever go away - and even if it makes some people's skin crawl, those shops certainly have a right to exist. Particularly if they keep turning a profit. It also needs to be recognized that, for many people, there is a definite appeal to the seedier side of sex. Hell, I'll admit to having dropped in on the various unsavory porn shops in my day, it's a bit of an illicit thrill.
