Fringe NYC kicks off this Friday and runs through August 24th. While there are plenty of great things to see and experience at the festival, only some of them are sexy.

The Mermaid Parade: Best Place to Make Out with Sea Creatures

It's Pride Month, which means there's plenty of LGBT fun and politics to be had - and while these days a lot of pride activities are all about boozing it up and dancing in the streets, there are plenty of political overtones. Not so with the annual Coney Island tradition known as the Mermaid Parade. A tradition since 1983, the Mermaid Parade celebrates one thing: the arrival of summer. It culminates in a trip to the water and a weird little summer solstice ritual, sometimes it's hard to tell the onlookers from the paraders, and there are always boobs on display. Elaborate costumes built to expose skin are pretty much the best thing ever - here's a little photo warm up with images of Mermaid Parades past.

Guide to Sex at NewFest

NewFest 2008 is the 20th annual installment of the New York LGBT Film Festival, and it's a no-brainer that lots of films at the 10 day festival (June 5-15th) will have something to do with sexuality. For those less interested in identity and more interested in the practices, Naked City has some suggestions for films to check out. Tickets for all screenings are $13, and can be purchased in advance (recommended) or at the theater.

The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela
(Iceland, 2008, 80 mins) In Tagalog with subtitles & English with English subtitles. Directed By: Olaf de Fleur. Saturday, June 14th 8:00pm. AMC Loews 34th St Theater 10
Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, director Olaf de Fleur’s unique feature focuses on Raquela, a transsexual Filipina prostitute who dreams of escaping her harsh reality for a fairy tale life in the West. Tired of working the streets, she turns to internet porn, where she seems to hit the goldmine – a chance to travel to Iceland, and an offer of a visa from Michael, the website’s New York-based owner. But is this all too good to be true?

Happy Birthday. (USA , Canada, 2008, 15 mins). Directed By: Roberta Marie Munroe. Wednesday, June 11th 5:45pm. AMC Loews 34th St Theater 13. Two couples might just get what they wish for in this comedy starring Julie Goldman, Deak Evgenikos, Lisa Branch and Yolonda Ross.

The Houseboy. (USA, 2007, 82 mins). Directed By: Spencer Schilly. Thursday, June 12th 10:15pm. AMC Loews 34th St Theater 13.
Twenty-something Ricky is feeling abandoned. He’s learned that the couple he has maintained a threesome with over the past year is planning on dumping him when they return home from Christmas holidays. In the meantime, he’s expected to housesit for them during the most depressing time of the year to be alone. To pass the time, and to attempt to feel human connection, he engages in anonymous hook-ups, but is left feeling empty. Has he reached the end of his rope, or could salvation await in the form of a friendly neighbor?

Looking for Romeo. (USA, 2007, 60 mins). Directed By: Arthur Ian. Friday, June 13th 10:30pm. AMC Loews 34th St Theater 6.
Male prostitution takes center stage in Looking for Romeo – from the perspectives of hustlers and johns alike. The former relate how and why they began turning tricks, while the latter explain, some with heart-breaking poignancy, others with frank pragmatism, their reasons for employing rentboys’ services. What emerges is a rare and sensitive insight into sex work.

Your Guide to Sex at the MoCCA Art Festival

Before there were cameras, there were dirty drawings. And now that there are cameras, dirty drawings have taken on a life of their own. This weekend the MoCCA Art Festival 2008 is happening: it benefits the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art and takes place at the Puck Building (295 Lafayette Street) on June 7th & 8th from 11 am to 6 pm. The event isn't one big smutfest - but if you know where to look, you'll find some real gems. Here are the official Naked City recommendations:

Molly Crabapple - Known for her lush, Victorian-inspired illustrations, Molly's art fuses her offbeat sense of humor with a passion for cacophonous scenes and overt objectification of both female and male bodies. Jess Fink - On the first glance at her website, Jess Fink's art looks innocent enough, if very much inspired by potty humor (the title of her Livejournal is "Jess likes poop"). But in addition to caricatures and comics about crazy run ins with her downstairs neighbor, Jess also does a comic called Chester 5000 XYV, which is a naughty comic about a lady and the robot who loves her, in which there are often pictures of boobs and penises. Becky Cloonan - Along with Steven T. Seagle, Becky Cloonan is the author of the series American Virgin, published by Vertigo. The books are all about Adam Chamberlain, a 20-year-old youth minister, a best-selling author, and head of a rabid national virginity movement. Danielle Corsetto - Danielle's webcomic Girls With Slingshots often veers in a sexual direction. It features lots of enthusiastic (though not crotch-shot explicit) female masturbation, especially in a recent storyline.
