Eric Gioia Has Been Spending Time on Craigslist Erotic Services

Gioia_Headshot3.jpg Councilman Eric Gioia has a dark vision of internet prostitution. In yesterday's AM New York, there's an article about an investigation he and his staff have been conducting about Craigslist erotic services ads. First of all, its hard to believe that "prostitutes use the internet as a virtual street corner!" (I'm paraphrasing) is actually news, but whatever. This article totally conflates coercive prostitution and trafficking with consensual sex work, which is terribly short sighted. Yes, vulnerable women should be protected from predatory business operators, but a police crackdown on consensual prostitution is a pretty big waste of time - not to mention tax payer's money. Spending three weeks looking at Erotic Services ads on Craigslist? Really, this council member's office doesn't have other stuff that needs getting done?

Gioia's district office contact information is here. I'm sure he'd be interested to hear from constituents who disagree with the way he's been spending tax payer money.

The Parent Trap: Babeland Talks Back About Parents & Sex

babeland.jpg On the Babeland blog, there's a great response to some of the attention the new Brooklyn Babeland has been getting because of the fact that they have baby changing tables in their restroom. Focus on the Family, which among other things is very much anti-porn, has conflated this gesture with what they see as Babeland's intent to rope in youngsters. Sex and family, always a terrifying combination.

The Happy Hooker Turns 65!

happyhooker.jpg

Xaviera Hollander, famous for her book "The Happy Hooker" as well as a number of other tomes on sex and prostitution, has just celebrated her 65th birthday with what I'm told was a large and boozy party in Amsterdam.

What do world-famous former madams think about their lives and the adult industry once they turn 65? Naked City endeavors to find out - I'm spending the next several days in Amsterdam. After my arrival tomorrow morning, I'll be headed straight for Xaviera's house, where I'm going to hang out with her, along with Annie Sprinkle and Elizabeth Stephens, and talk about the changes in the industry, plus lots of other stuff. Yes, there will be video.

If you've got any questions you'd love to ask any of these women, leave them in the comments!

Herpes in NYC on the Rise

herpes.jpg
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene put out a press release yesterday reporting that more than 1 in 4 New Yorkers are infected with Herpes Simplex Virus-2, the virus that causes genital herpes. The rate of infection in New York is higher than the national average, which the CDC reports as 1 in 5 adults.

Though the information in the press release delves deeper and gives better information, the second part of the headline, "Survey Finds Genital Herpes is Common Among New Yorkers: Condoms Can Protect Against Infection" is a little misleading. Sure, condoms can protect against herpes in some cases, but it's a skin-to-skin kinda thing, not just body fluids like other STIs such as HIV.

At any rate, that rate of infection is a good reason to have safer sex, do it with the lights on and actually look at your partner's parts, plus learn to cope with it if you have a partner who fesses up to being infected.

Gay-Friendly Cult Wants to See More Kissing

rael.jpg

My first encounter with the Raelians (yes, the intelligent design people) and their sexual politics was in Las Vegas, at the 2007 Adult Entertainment Expo. Yes, I met a cult at a porn convention. I was hoping that sentence would sound stranger than it does - but I guess it doesn't. At that time they were promoting their organization Cliltoraid, which is raising funds to start a hospital in Burkina Faso that will do reconstructive surgery on women who have had clitorodectomies. The official slogan of Clitoraid is "Adopt a Clitoris."

Yesterday I got a curious press release from with the subject heading, "Rael asks gays to kiss in public." Here's a snippet:

“I ask all gay men and lesbians to start kissing in public as often and as publicly as possible, and perhaps to launch a National Gay Kissing Day,” Rael said in an official statement released Monday. The founder and leader of the International Raelian Movement was reacting to a much-publicized incident at Seattle’s Safeco Field in which a lesbian was asked by an usher to stop kissing her companion.

He compared denying gays the right to kiss in U.S. public places to the draconian public morality codes enforced in countries such as Saudi Arabia.

Though a religious leader could clearly be saying much worse things about public expressions of affection between queers, I don't really think it's his place to be calling for action. Which isn't to say that queer activists should be left to fend for themselves and have no outspoken allies, but I don't think Rael is the best face for National Gay Kissing Day. Unless he starts making out with the male members of his congregation in public to prove there's nothing wrong with it. Now that would be good entertainment.

Seeking Volunteers for Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program

The Mount Sinai Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program is seeking volunteers who live in Manhattan or Western Queens.

From SAVI's site:

The mission of the Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Program at Mount Sinai (SAVI) is to provide free and confidential counseling, advocacy, support and referral services to past and present survivors of rape, sexual assault, incest, and domestic violence, and to their families and friends.

SAVI conducts an annual training for Volunteer Advocates who see hundreds of survivors at the nine hospitals served by the program. More than 200 sensitive and caring SAVI Advocates are available to support survivors in emergency rooms during medical treatment and evidence collection. This immediate crisis intervention is critical to eventual recovery.

Though the site still lists the dates for 2007 training, the 2008 training dates are similar, running in October and November (including two full weekends). Volunteers must complete all training workshops for a total of 40 hours.

Max Hardcore: Guilty on Obscenity Charges

Maxhardcore.jpg

I really loathe Max Hardcore. And the thing is, I'm not the kind of girl who only likes soft and fluffy porn either. But Max, the man himself, makes my skin crawl. He's the epitome of the misogynistic good ole boy and it sees that he often preys on women in the adult industry who are a few crayons shy of a full box.

That said, it's frightening that he's been found guilty of 10 federal counts of distributing obscene materials over the Internet and through the mail. His trial, which has taken place in Tampa, has been a source of anxiety for folks in the adult industry, especially coupled with the obscenity woes of John Stagliano.

Max intends to appeal, but at the moment his sentencing date is set for September 5th.

Governor's Poll: How Do New Yorkers Feel About Same-Sex Marriage?

From the Marriage Equality New York website:

Gov. David Paterson told state agencies on May 14 that New York must recognize same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts, Canada and other places where they are legal. The directive should provide gay couples with as many as 1,300 rights afforded to married heterosexuals, including the ability to collect health and pension benefits, being admitted as “close family” in a hospital room and transferring a business license.

On June 3rd, a Christian legal organization says it has sued to stop New York from recognizing same-sex marriages legally performed in other states. The Alliance Defense Fund says it filed its lawsuit Tuesday in a court in the Bronx. Several Republican state senators are named as party to the suit. The Arizona-based legal group filing the lawsuit has intervened elsewhere in gay marriage and religious freedom cases.

Governor Patterson is doing a poll on whether people support his decision. Take 5 seconds to lodge your support, just call 1-518-474-8390. You will talk to a live person from the Governor's office during business hours.

Just say "I support the Governor's position on same sex marriage," then give them your 5 digit (New York) zip code.

Counterfeit Condom Alert

trojan22count.jpg

This past week a crew of eight people was busted for operating a counterfeit goods ring out of a Queens warehouse. Among the objects counterfeited are Trojan condoms, which have been sold in discount stores in the New York metro area and have ventured as far as Virginia and Texas.

From a Newsday article on the bust:

The packaging of the Chinese condoms is almost identical to the legitimate ones, except that the counterfeit packaging is plastic, while the legitimate product is packaged in aluminum foil, said another source familiar with the investigation. "They [the counterfeiters] spent all their money on printing," said the source.

It's not certain whether the condoms were of inferior quality to their authentic counterparts or not. So inspect your Trojan packaging if that's a brand you use!
